Variously described as “Europe’s last wilderness” and “Europe’s best kept secret”, Romania is a true gem of a destination. With a rich and varied history, stunning mountain scenery and a rural way of life unchanged for centuries, it has a charm of its own and yet is almost unknown. Sooner or later, we fear, it will be “discovered” and then, perhaps, the charm will disappear. Meanwhile it remains the preserve of a handful of very specialist tour operators. Amongst its many attractions is Transylvania with its castles and unspoiled forests and mountains, still home to bears, wolves and other rare fauna. Then there are Bucovina’s famous painted monasteries and the northern region of Maramureş where old wooden houses and churches stand in villages where most people live by agriculture and follow traditional crafts and customs. Everywhere in rural Romania we find horses and carts instead of tractors and villages with traditional looking wells. Such scenes have now become unique in Europe. Almost all the money spent on these holidays goes directly into Romania’s local economy – locally owned accommodation, restaurants, transport and so on, not forgetting local guides who rely on visitors for their livelihood.
