Inspired by the BBC TV travels of Michael Portillo, we sample Scotland’s “Highland” delights, riding the spectacular “Kyle line” & “The Road to the Isles”, marvelling at the northern moors en route to Wick and Orkney, sailing on Loch Katrine with the steamer “Sir Walter Scott”.
Day 1 – Welcome to Glasgow
We enjoy a ‘welcome dinner’ on arrival when our tour leader will outline travel plans and offer advice on how to spend free time. Overnight in Glasgow.
Day 2 – Glasgow and Stirling Castle
Free morning to explore this vibrant city where the excellent Transport Museum is worth a visit. A midday departure takes us to Stirling for an afternoon visit to the Castle to take in the “jewel” of the Stewart Court. See the Royal Apartments and Chapel, stroll through the garden and much more. Overnight in Stirling.
Day 3 – Loch Katrine and on to Aberdeen
This morning take a memorable sail on Loch Katrine aboard the steam ship “Sir Walter Scott”, before heading north to the granite city of Aberdeen for a 2-night stay.
Day 4 – Royal Deeside
A full day excursion along Royal Deeside stopping at Crathes Castle & Gardens in the morning followed by a visit to Braemar Castle.
Day 5 – Inverness, Capital of the Highlands
We take the former Great North of Scotland line to Inverness for a 3-night stay. In the afternoon we join the “Nessie” search by taking a cruise on Loch Ness.
Day 6 – Kyle of Lochalsh
Today we take the stunningly spectacular train ride to Kyle of Lochalsh, a truly “world class route”!
Day 7 – Jacobite Steam Train
A full day excursion to Fort William beginning with a cruise on Loch Linnhe, followed by an afternoon on the famous “Jacobite” steam train to Mallaig. Another truly “world class” rail journey!
Day 8 – To the North
Yet another spectacular train journey across the unbelievably beautiful Caithness wilderness, to the Pentland Firth and an overnight stay in Wick.
Day 9 – On to Orkney
An early morning departure by road takes us to the port at Scrabster for our ferry sailing to Stromness. We visit the Highland Park Distillery before continuing by road to Kirkwall for a 2-night stay.
Day 10 – Orkney Tour
A full day’s tour of the “mainland” taking in Skara Brae, Skail House, Ring of Brodgar, Churchill’s “barrier ships”, the Italian Chapel and much more.
Day 11 – To the Grampians
Another delightful journey, first by ferry to Scrabster, before taking a train back to Inverness.
Day12 – The Highland “Mainline” to Edinburgh
This morning we take a return journey on the Strathspey Railway to Broomhill in the heart of “Osprey” country. After a lunch break in Aviemore, we catch the early afternoon train direct to Edinburgh for a 2-night stay.
Day 13 – Edinburgh
A day at leisure in Edinburgh. Optional visits include the Castle, former Royal Yacht ‘Britannia’ or the excellent Botanical Gardens. Enjoy a ‘farewell dinner’ in our hotel this evening.
Day 14 – Homeward Bound
Travel home from Edinburgh independently.
