A week’s holiday devoted entirely to exploring Switzerland’s famous Rhätischebahn in the mountainous canton of Graubünden.
We take a lunchtime flight from London Heathrow to Zürich with an onward rail connection for Chur. Our hotel for the next 6 nights is centrally located in Chur where we stay on a bed and breakfast basis.
Today we have a guided behind the scenes tour of the RhB workshops at Landquart. Here you will find a totally up-to-date facility capable of dealing not only with the day to day maintenance of both modern and historic equipment but also major overhauls and complete rebuilds. The RhB may be a narrow gauge line but, in terms of operation and engineering, it thinks very big indeed. The rest of the day is free to explore the narrow gauge lines of the Rhätischebahn.
A full day escorted excursion from Chur to Tirano travelling on the Bernina Express route. With its spirals and tunnels and reaching an altitude of more than 2000m this journey is breathtaking.
We take a morning train through the car transporting Vereina tunnel to Scuol-Tarasp, the most easterly station in Switzerland, before heading back via Zernez and Bever to St. Moritz. After a brief break we board the afternoon Gourmino dining train back to Chur where we indulge in a three course meal.
After a leisurely breakfast we take the train to Ilanz where we travel through the untamed Rhine Gorge, along the turquoise-green waters of the Rhine, past rock walls known as 'ruinas' up to 350m high. We return to Chur and after a lunch break we travel up the Arosabahn to the resort town of Arosa before returning at leisure to Chur.
This morning we make our way to Davos where we find a heritage loco awaiting us, either a vintage Ge4/4 or Crocodile. Both are classic RhB locos once a common sight. This loco will haul our heritage train to Filisur. This afternoon, we board the Landwasser Viaduct shuttle where we have an opportunity to climb up to the viewing platform atop the Zalaint tunnel and watch as the trains come and go across the viaduct.
We take a morning train back to Zürich Airport where we board an afternoon flight back to London.
