This classic tour gives ample opportunity to explore by train and see the varied, scenic sights of Switzerland.

Day 1 - London to Switzerland

Depart on Eurostar mid-morning from London St Pancras to Paris, then onwards by TGV to Basle, where we have an overnight stay. Standard class with reserved seats.

Day 2 - Neuchâtel

Neuchatel - © swiss-image.ch/Stephan EnglerFree morning in Basle to explore the city and its extensive tram network. From Basle we will be travelling in first class using our unlimited first class Swiss Pass, which is provided as part of the holiday. We depart early afternoon for the short journey to Neuchâtel where we have a 3-night stay. It is an ideal centre from which to explore the area and a list of suggested excursions will be available which can be taken using your travel pass.

Days 3 and 4 - Leisure Time

Neuchatel - © swiss-image.ch/Stephan EnglerThe Swiss Pass provides the opportunity to take the train into the Jura region, very close to the French border, or alternatively relax with a trip on the lake. Our experienced tour leader will be available to offer an optional escorted excursion each day, and, for those who prefer to be more independent, they will be happy to assist with planning and timings.

Day 5 - The Bernese Oberland

We travel into the region dominated by the peaks of the Eiger and Jungfrau via a metre gauge railway line which rises steeply from the lakeside at Montreux. The wonderful panorama of Lake Geneva soon gives way to the mountains and we end our journey in Thun. The town is situated on the lake of the same name and the skyline is dominated by the castle. We are based here for a 3-night stay.

Days 6 and 7 - Explore

There is so much on offer in this region ranging from lake steamers to mountain railways and cable cars. Our excursion list will hopefully help to ensure everyone gets the most out of the region and once again our tour leader will be offering an optional excursion each day.

Day 8 - Glacier Express

Glacier Express - © Switzerland TourismAfter a short journey by train south to Brig we will make a connection with the world famous Glacier Express. One of Switzerland’s most scenic journeys, we are afforded the best views through the panoramic windows so sit back, relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery as we travel to Chur, which is the oldest city in Switzerland. We stay for 4 nights in this charming historic city and our hotel is in the traffic free area of the old town.

Day 9 - Explore

Rhaetian Railway - © Switzerland TourismChur is the home of the UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railways which celebrates its 125th Anniversary in 2014. So what better way to explore than by travelling on one of their charming red trains into the surrounding area. Arosa, Davos and Klosters are within easy reach. Our excursion booklet has lots of options and there will be an optional excursion each day.

Day 10 - Bernina Express

Chur - © Stephan EnglerA full day excursion from Chur to Tirano in northern Italy. This route is the only North-South Alpine rail crossing and the summit of the line lies at an altitude of 2253m (7391ft). The panoramic windows of our first class coach give us a wide vista and the many spirals and tunnels all make this a wonderful day out.

Day 11 - Further Leisure Time

A day at leisure to explore the city of Chur with its cobbled streets and 13th Century Cathedral or to use the Rhaetian Railway network one last time! There will be an optional excursion offered by our tour leader.

Day 12 - Ticino and Centovalli

Leaving Chur after breakfast we travel on the San Bernardino postbus to Bellinzona. From here it is a short journey by train to Locarno where we have time for lunch. After lunch we travel by the Centovalli line, one of the most scenic in Switzerland, and eventually arrive into the Rhône Valley at Brig. We stay here for 2 nights.

Day 13 - Furka Steam

Today we have a full day excursion. We start by taking the local train from Brig to Realp to join the Furka Bergstrecke. Operated by steam this rack line uses the original track bed of the Glacier Express route over the pass. We take a full return trip to Oberwald and at the end of the day return to Brig by local train.

Day 14 - To Basle

Free time in Brig - a chance to take the train to Zermatt, the traffic free resort nestling at the foot of the Matterhorn. Return to Brig in time to leave mid-afternoon to Basle for an overnight stay.
