Isle of Man Driving Experience
Tuesday 15 May to Monday 21 May 2012
The Isle of Man is one of the UK’s hidden gems for steam travel and vintage transport. This tour will indulge your passion for old-fashioned transportation as you go behind the scenes of working railways and trams and tour this pretty island in style.
Day 1 Douglas
We meet at the Welbeck Hotel in Douglas to enjoy an evening meal together. You can start using your Explorer Pass as soon as you arrive on the Isle – travel free on the Manx Electric and Steam Railways, horse drawn tram on Douglas sea front and some buses. It also covers transfer from Ronaldsway Airport to Douglas Harbour for those who have chosen to fly to the Isle of Man.
Day 2 Manx Electric Railway
![]()
Morning departure by horse drawn tram to the Manx Electric Railway terminal. Following a briefing by railway personnel we embark on a full day's driving experience in our chartered tram. We will make three round trips between Laxey and Ramsey, giving everybody the opportunity to drive their own tram. Lunch will be provided at Laxey. There will be time to visit the Snaefell Railway or Laxey Wheel before returning to Douglas in our tram for an organised visit to the Derby Castle workshops.
Day 3 At leisure
A day at leisure to explore the island with your Pass. Please remember to return to Douglas in time to join the group tour of the Douglas Steam Railway workshop.
Day 4 Manx Steam Railway
![]()
The morning is spent on the Manx Steam Railway. We travel from Douglas to Port Erin and have a guided tour of the Railway Museum. Part of the museum is used for maintaining locos currently in use on the line. Exhibits include refurbished locomotives, some carriages, track, railway equipment, switches, memorabilia and relics dating back to 1873 - the opening of the Island's first passenger steam railway. Time for lunch in Port Erin before we make our way back to Douglas, or you may wish to travel back independently using your pass and stop off at Castletown.
Day 5 Groudle Glen Railway – Ours for the Day
We have hired the Groudle Glen railway for the day. There will be time for everyone to have a footplate experience as well as a guided tour of the workshop and shed. There will also be photo opportunities with run pasts. The Sea Lion Rocks Tearooms will be open for our use, a perfect location to relax and enjoy the cliff top views.
Day 6 Island Tour
Today we hire a vintage coach to take us on a tour of the Island. We stop at Peel to visit the Manx Transportation Museum before continuing to Sulby to see the Orchid Line Miniature Railway, set within a wildlife park, where there will be time for lunch. Our final call will be the Jurby Transport Museum where we have a guided tour. We return to our hotel in Douglas for a farewell dinner.
Day 7 Farewell
Depending on your departure time, you may have time to make the most of your Pass and do some last minute exploring before making your way home.
