Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Family Activity Break
Holiday Highlights
- Experience quality time with your family in a timeless way
- Nostalgic steam train journeys
- Enjoy Snowdonia National Park
If you've never visited North Wales with the kids then this is an ideal introduction to this great part of Britain - and you don't even have to get in the car to get there and explore! This 3-night break includes train travel from your nearest railway station so you can sit back and enjoy the journey with the children and arrive refreshed. The world famous Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways are the perfect way to discover the scenic landscape of Snowdonia National Park and the Vale of Ffestiniog. This family package includes journeys on both railways. The price quoted is for rail travel from London's Euston station but we can provide a quote for travel from any UK station.
Itinerary
Day 1
Travel from London Euston to Porthmadog on the edge of Snowdonia. Depart London mid morning, and with just one change of trains in Birmingham arrive in Porthmadog at tea time. Travelling by train means time to spend with family.
Day 2
Breakfast is available in Spooners, on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway platform at Harbour station. Today take a return trip on the Ffestiniog Railway, the world’s oldest narrow gauge railway with almost 200 years of history, taking you on a 13½-mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Climb over 700 feet from sea level into the mountains through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests, past lakes and waterfalls, round tight bends (even a complete spiral) clinging to the side of the mountain or tunnelling through it.
Day 3
Return to Harbour Station for a trip on The Welsh Highland Railway, the UK’s longest heritage railway which runs for 25 miles to Caernarfon, through the stunning Aberglaslyn Pass, past the picture postcard village of Beddgelert and the foot of Snowdon. Passengers ride in some of the most comfortable carriages on any heritage railway in the UK.
In Caernarfon there is time to visit the intimidating Castle.
Day 4
Why not try breakfast in the locally renowned Breaktimes Cafe close to the Travelodge. There is time to squeeze in a trip to the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway where, as well as a short train ride, you will stop at the Engine Sheds where you get to climb into the cabs of the locomotives and see how things work, as well as ride on the miniature railway.
Return home by train, or extend your trip.
