New for 2018 is a Small & Traditional tour to Albania, we also visit the beautiful island of Mallorca to explore its rail network and experience the tramways of France and Portugal. The Orcadian – A Scottish Adventure
Savour the alluring Scottish Highlands and its majestic moors on this escorted 14-day adventure. We sample the delights of the astounding ‘Kyle of Lochalsh Line’ and Balmoral Castle. Sail on Loch Katrine and much more. Scotland is a great destination for both rail and scenery enthusiasts.
Wales: From North to South
A comprehensive tour of the 'Great Little Trains of Wales' and some of Wales’ finest cultural highlights. Journey through the stunning scenery of Snowdonia National Park and along the scenic Welsh coast towards the capital, Cardiff. Visits include the Italianate village of Portmeirion, St Fagans open-air Museum and Caerphilly Castle.
Ffestiniog Railway – Behind the Scenes
An access-all-areas tour of one of the most famous railways in Britain, if not the world. Our close connection to the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways means we are in a unique position to take you behind the scenes of these heritage railways and visit parts not normally seen by the average passenger.
Isle of Man
Go behind the scenes of the Isle of Man’s railways to enjoy footplate rides and engine driving experiences. As well as museum visits we ride the Groudle Glen Railway, Laxey Mine Railway, Manx Electric Railway, Isle of Man Steam Railway, Snaefell Mountain Railway, Douglas Bay Horse tram and the Orchid line.
Slovakia – Romantic Mountains and Ancient Towns
One of the lesser known Central European countries, Slovakia has a wealth of mountains, historic towns and unspoilt villages that are a joy to visit and will appeal to all. We explore Banská Bystrica, the UNESCO area around Banská Stiavnica , journey on the Forest Steam Railway at Čiernohronská, cross the High Tatra Mountains, visit Spisský Castle and much more.
The Rhine – from Sea to Source
Still one of Europe’s most important waterways for both goods and leisure traffic, we follow its course from the North Sea to its source in the heart of the Swiss Alps via Holland and Germany. A great way to discover this mighty river and the scenic and urban landscapes it passes through, but by train rather than river cruise.
Green Hills of Spain – Plus La Rhune
This wonderful holiday combines the spectacular northern “Green” coast of Spain with vibrant cities and includes a short visit to south western France. We travel on metre gauge lines, take the rack railway up La Rhune and spend time exploring the cities of San Sebastian, Bilbao, Leon and Santiago de Compostela.
Swiss Alpine Holiday
This classic tour highlights some of the very best Alpine scenery. The Splendour of Corsica
Travel by train and ferry to this geographically diverse, Mediterranean paradise. Enjoy unlimited travel on the island's narrow gauge system with the travel card provided. Soak up Corsican culture with free time in the coastal towns of Bastia, Calvi and Ajaccio.
The Far West of Ireland
A revisit to the Republic of Ireland where we experience the culture and heritage of this Emerald Isle. From Dublin we head west to Galway and Limerick where we visit the West Clare Railway and Foynes Flying Boat Museum. We then loop back to Dublin via Cork and Waterford before heading home to the UK.
Mallorca Narrow Gauge – NEW
This short break based in Palma combines travelling on the island’s rail network, including the famous Soller Tramway, with free time to explore the city itself. Visit Palma’s Medievel historic heart and majestic Gothic Cathedral, wander around its many galleries and craft studios and sample delicious food and drink at its many pavement cafes and restaurants.
Dresden Steam Festival
With a firm focus on steam, this holiday includes a comprehensive visit to the 10th Dresden Steam Engine Festival where we will have access to the festival area around the railway museum and the Dresden traffic museum, as well as an evening illuminated photo session of steam locomotives at Roundhouse 1. We also journey on the Lößnitzgrundbahn and have a day excursion by paddlesteamer to Saxon Switzerland.
Tramways of France – NEW
We continue our successful range of tramway tours by visiting France in 2018. This tour takes in Lyon, Grenoble, Marseille, Saint Etienne, Paris and Lille. There will be time in each to ride the many lines of the varying networks – a great way to explore each city.
Trams and Trains of Portugal – NEW
We fly to Lisbon to explore the heavy and light rail networks on the Iberian Peninsula. We take a ride on the steam-hauled Douro historic train as well as visits to railway museums. The tour will include visits to the Coimbra trolleybus and Sintra tram as well as the modern tram networks.
The Baltics: Steam, Trams and Trains
We follow in Michael Portillo's footsteps and explore the Baltic coastal region which has plenty to offer by way of trams and trains. Journey from Finland to Estonia, then via the Baltic Express to Moscow. We return to the coast via Latvia before flying home from Stockholm.
Les Petit Trains de France Revisited
Journey through the Somme and Burgundy, sampling the railway delights en route. Our destination is southern France, known for its spectacular mountain scenery and famous little railways. We ride on the 'Little Yellow Train', the 'Train of Marvels' and the Vivarais system.
Narrow Gauge Steam in Eastern Germany
Visit the various steam hauled lines in the Dresden area including the Zittau, Cranzahl and Oberwiesenthal. Then head up to the Baltic coast to ride the Molli and the Racing Roland on the Isle of Rugen. We visit Berlin with a public transport card and of course ride the famous Harzerschmalspurbahnen.
Eastern Canada in the Fall
We take the train through Canada's great wilderness to Northern Quebec and Ontario, see the Fall colours along the St Lawrence River and enjoy the remoteness of James Bay. This is a tour for those who like something completely different and well away from the usual tourist beat.
Peru & Bolivia
This rail holiday embraces the best of Peru and Bolivia. Astonishing scenery, amazing train journeys and the wondrous Inca site of Machu Picchu. Includes a journey on the Andean Explorer, a visit to Ballestas Islands and an excursion across the awe inspiring salt flats of Uyuni.
California - The Golden State – NEW
We include a stay on the RMS Queen Mary at Long Beach and a journey on the famous Coast Starlight Amtrak service. We visit the San Francisco cable cars and the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), as well as riding behind Shays at Santa Cruz and the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad.
Small & Traditional Tours 2018
Uzbekistan and the Silk Road
Silks, spices and Emperor Tamerlane explain how this small republic once governed most of Central Asia. Visit beautiful Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand plus the bustling capital Tashkent. Travel between Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara is by rail, including the new fast “Afrosiab” service.
Romania’s Danube Delta and the Carpathians – a wildlife paradise
Study birdlife from close quarters whilst staying at a small guesthouse, reached by boat. Have the option to go on a night watch for bears in the Carpathians. From Zarneşti, visit a bear sanctuary and nearby Braşov. Special steam train on the Covasna and Comandau former forestry railway.
Rural Romania – Where Time Stands Still
Step back in time in the mountains and forests of northern Romania. Stay in family run “homestays” (en suite) and enjoy local produce. Visit remote Saxon villages with their fortified churches, the Painted Monasteries and ride the narrow gauge railways at Sovata, Vişeu de Sus and Moldovita.
Moldova and Eastern Romania
Explore Moldova’s famous wineries, monasteries and broad gauge railways. Experience a touch of the USSR in breakaway Transdniester and take the train into Romania for a tour of Iaşi by vintage tram. Ride the Moldovita narrow gauge steam railway and stay in a combination of good hotels and family run “homestays” (en suite).
