If you have never visited North Wales with the kids then this is an ideal introduction to this great part of Britain - and you don't even have to get in the car to get there and explore! This 4-night break can be done by rail from your nearest station so you can sit back and enjoy the journey with the children and arrive refreshed. The world famous Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways are the perfect way to discover the scenic landscape of Snowdonia National Park and the Vale of Ffestiniog. This family package includes journeys on both railways.
Day 1 – Rail to Porthmadog
Travel from your home station to Porthmadog on the edge of Snowdonia. Travelling by train means time to spend with family.
Day 2 – Ffestiniog Railway
Take a return trip on the Ffestiniog Railway, the world’s oldest narrow gauge railway with almost 200 years of history, taking you on a 13½-mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Climb over 700 feet from sea level into the mountains through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests, past lakes and waterfalls, round tight bends (even a complete spiral) clinging to the side of the mountain or tunnelling through it. The train will take you to Blaenau Ffestiniog where you could visit Llechwedd slate caverns, to discover the story of slate on an amazing tour, or go on an off-road adventure into the heart of Llechwedd’s Mountains. For the more energetic why not discover your inner James Bond and Lara Croft on the Zip World Bounce Below? Ideal for thrill seekers aged seven – an opportunity to get a shot of pure, unadulterated fun in a spectacular setting deep underground. Return to Porthmadog on the Ffestiniog Railway. You can break the journey at Tan-y-Bwlch where you can explore the nature trail, or enjoy the scenery from the licensed cafe with playground.
Day 3 – Welsh Highland Railway
Return to Harbour Station for a trip on The Welsh Highland Railway, the UK’s longest heritage railway which runs for 25 miles to Caernarfon, through the stunning Aberglaslyn Pass, past the picture postcard village of Beddgelert and the foot of Snowdon. Passengers ride in some of the most comfortable carriages on any heritage railway in the UK. In Caernarfon there is time to visit the impressive Castle.
Day 4 – Heritage Railway or Beach
Visit the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway this morning where, as well as a short train ride, you will stop at the Engine Sheds where you get to climb into the cabs of the locomotives and see how things work, as well as ride on the miniature railway. You could spend the afternoon exploring the local town, visiting the maritime museum or perhaps grab your bucket and fishing line and head to the harbour for a spot of ‘crabbing’. Alternatively you could take a mainline train to the beautiful seaside town of Barmouth for a day at the beach or simply to enjoy some fish and chips in the sea air.
Day 5 – Train Home
Take a morning train from Porthmadog back to your home station.
