Well established in Ffestiniog Travel's tour programme is a visit to the German Christmas markets. This year we head north to the Baltic coast resort of Stralsund, visiting a couple of steam railways in the local area as well as taking in the colourful and festive Christmas markets.

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Cologne

We begin our tour by taking a mid-morning Eurostar from London St. Pancras International to Brussels where we connect with a high speed train to Cologne. Our hotel is located within the station building.

Day 2 – Stralsund

The tour continues with a mid-morning InterCityExpress service north east to Stralsund. We arrive early evening and it is an easy transfer to our hotel, located adjacent to the station and just a short walk from the centre of town.

Day 3 – Baltic Coast

Stralsund's Christmas market extends from Alter Markt Square with its Gothic town hall to Neuer Markt Square. The town hall has the largest vaulted cellar in the Baltic region where you can browse the arts and crafts stalls to find that perfect gift. There is also plenty to see in the local area. Whether you want to visit the astronomical clock in nearby Rostock or visit the “Historical Technical Information Museum” in Peenemunde, today is free to explore with your German Rail Pass.

Days 4 & 5 – Steam Railways

Your tour leader will organise optional escorted excursions to the Molli narrow gauge steam railway in Bad Doberan and also a visit to the Island of Rügen, where the narrow gauge railway and its Rasender Roland steam train is an important tourist attraction. The cost of reaching these lines is included in your German Rail Pass but the steam train fares must be purchased locally.

Day 6 – Stralsund at Leisure

The tour leader will organise an optional excursion by rail to Lübeck, a beautiful Hanseatic city and port.

Day 7 – Cologne

We return to Cologne using the same rail route, arriving early evening and allowing time to explore its festive Christmas markets.

Day 8 – Homeward Bound

A morning departure by high speed train to Brussels and finally London. Arrive back in London mid- afternoon.
