The Harzer Schmalspurbahnen never lets us down when steam trains are concerned and this October is no exception as we head to Wernigerode for the annual Gala. We enjoy three days of steam trains on the railway as we join the HSB Interest group on their “Kleinbahnromantik im Selketal”

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Cologne

We start our tour by taking mid morning Eurostar from London St. Pancras International to Brussels where we connect to high speed train to Cologne. Our hotel for tonight, the Ibis Köln am Dom, is found within the station building.

Day 2 – Onwards to Wernigerode

We take a morning train travelling via Hannover and Goslar to Wernigerode for an afternoon arrival. Transfer to the Weisser Hirsch, our hotel for the next 5 nights.

Day 3 – Wernigerode at leisure

A free day today. The railway is operating a standard service today or there is the town to explore. The castle overlooking the town holds a fascinating museum and is well worth a visit, those not wanting to make the climb can take the road train which departs from the Market Square.

Day 4 – The Brocken

After a free morning we depart from Wernigerode behind one of the railways historical Mallets (built in 1897) we travel towards Drei Annen Hohne and up the Brocken reaching 1,141 meters. The Brocken is the highest peak in the Harz Mountains, if we’re lucky enough to be granted a clear day we will be rewarded with spectacular views of the tree-lined hillsides and surrounding countryside before returning to Wernigerode.

Day 5 – Mixed traffic to Eisfelder Talmühle

Today we join a mixed freight train to Eisfelder Talmühle, there will be plenty of run pasts and other photographic opportunities.

Day 6 – Wernigerode, Eisfelder Talmühle and Quedlinburg

Today we join our heritage train again from Wernigerode to Eisfelder Talmühle where we are joined by a mixed freight train as we head down the Selketalbahn from Eisfelder Talmuhle and riding all the way to Quedlinburg. We are expecting 99 6001and 995906 to be hauling the mixed train. Upon arrival in Quedlinburg we have a coach transfer back to Wernigerode.

Day 7 – Dusseldorf

We take a morning train via Goslar and Hannover to Dusseldorf where we spend our final night at the InterCityHotel Dusseldorf, the afternoon is free to explore. A local transport card is included for the local area which includes the Line to Wuppertal-Vohwinkel and the famous Wuppertal Schwebebahn.

Day 8 – Homeward bound

We take a morning train to Cologne where we change on to the ICE to Brussels and making a final change on to the Eurostar to London. Arrive back in London mid afternoon.
