This classic tour gives ample opportunity to explore by train and see the varied sights of Switzerland. Delight in memorable journeys through mountain scenery and traditional villages with a first class Swiss Travel Pass.
Day 1 – London to Switzerland
Depart on Eurostar early morning from London St Pancras to Paris, then onwards by TGV to Basle, where we have an overnight stay. Standard class with reserved seats.
Day 2 – Lausanne
Free morning in Basle to explore the city and its extensive tram network. Whilst in Switzerland we will be travelling in first class using our unlimited travel pass, which is provided as part of the holiday. We depart early afternoon to Lausanne where we have a 3-night stay. Situated on Lake Geneva it is an ideal centre from which to explore the area and you will be given a list of suggested excursions which can be taken using your travel pass. Your tour leader will offer an optional escorted excursion each day.
Days 3 & 4 - Leisure Time
Lausanne's medieval city has shop-lined streets, a 12th-Century Gothic cathedral and the 19th-Century Palais de Rumine, housing fine art and science museums. Using your travel pass you can take the train into the mountains or relax with a trip on the lake. There will be an optional escorted excursion each day but if you prefer to be independent your tour leader will be happy to assist with planning and timings. Possible destinations include Zermatt and the old walled town of Murten.
Day 5 – The Bernese Oberland
Moving into the region dominated by the peaks of the Eiger and Jungfrau, via the metre gauge rail line, which rises steeply from the lakeside at Montreux. The wonderful panorama of Lake Geneva soon gives way to the mountains and we end our journey in Meiringen. The village is an ideal starting point for excursions over the Alpine bus routes and is synonymous with the legend of Sherlock Holmes. We are based here for a 2-night stay.
Day 6 – Explore
There is so much on offer in this region ranging from postbus routes to mountain railways and cable cars. Our excursion list will hopefully help to ensure that you get the most out of the region and once again your tour leader will be offering an optional escorted excursion.
Day 7 – Thun
A short transfer by train today takes us via Interlaken to Thun. The town is situated on the lake of the same name and the skyline is dominated by the castle. We are based here for a 3-night stay. Optional afternoon boat cruise.
Days 8 & 9 – Free Time
Thun is the gateway to the Bernese Oberland with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau rising majestically across Lake Thun. The 12th Century castle and city church proudly dominate the late-medieval Old Town. There will be an optional escorted excursion each day but if you prefer to be independent your tour leader will be happy to help with times and planning. Destinations may include Lauterbrunnen and Brienz.
Day 10 – Glacier Express
A short journey by train south to Brig connects with the world famous Glacier Express. One of Switzerland’s most scenic journeys delivers the best views through the panoramic windows so sit back, relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery as we travel to Chur, the oldest city in Switzerland. We stay for 4 nights in this charming historical city and our hotel is in the traffic free area of the old town.
Day 11 – Free Time
Being the home of the UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railways network what better way to explore than taking one of their red trains into the surrounding area. You can visit Arosa, Davos and Klosters all of which are within easy reach. Our excursion booklet has lots of possibilities and there will be an optional escorted excursion each day.
Day 12 – Bernina Express
A full day excursion from Chur to Tirano in northern Italy. This route is the only North-South Alpine rail crossing and the summit of the line lies at an altitude of 2253 metres (7391 ft). The panoramic windows of your first class coach give you a wide vista and the many spirals and tunnels all make this a wonderful day out.
Day 13 – Further Leisure Time
Today you are at leisure to explore the city of Chur with its cobbled streets and 13th Century cathedral or to use the Rhaetian Railway network one last time! There will be an optional excursion offered by your tour leader.
Day 14 – To Cologne
Leaving Chur after breakfast we travel to Basle where we connect with the train to Cologne, travelling on the classic Rhine route. Overnight in Cologne.
Day 15 – To London
We take the morning Thalys service to Brussels, connecting with the Eurostar service to London St Pancras, arriving early afternoon. Standard class with reserved seats.
