Friday 9 June to Saturday 17 June 2017
We visit North Wales and its famous narrow gauge railways. All meals are included on this Grand Tour as we journey on many rail lines, visit castles and cruise down the Llangollen canal.
Day 1 – Chester
Meet at The Queen Hotel for a welcome dinner and first night stay.
Day 2 – Roman Deva and Traditional Afternoon Tea
We take a walking tour focussing on the heritage of the city from Roman times through to the modern day. Our tour ends at the Chester Grosvenor Hotel where we take afternoon tea. Coach transfer to Betws-y-Coed and The Royal Oak, our hotel for the next 4 nights.
Day 3 – Climbing yr Wyddfa
This morning we take an excursion to Llanberis to take the train to i gopa’r Wyddfa (the summit of Snowdon). After a return trip we have lunch before taking an escorted trip into Electric Mountain where we discover how water provides a much needed boost to the country’s electricity needs! After a fascinating tour we ride the Llanberis Lake Railway before returning to Betws-y-Coed.
Day 4 – Slate to Porthmadog
Transfer to Llechwedd Slate Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog where we learn how Blaenau quarried the slate and exported it to the world. After a buffet lunch we follow the route of the slate down to the port of Porthmadog on the Ffestiniog Railway. We then transfer to Caernarfon, where we visit Edward I’s Castle, before returning to Betws-y-Coed.
Day 5 – Castles and Gardens
Bodnant Garden and its 80 acres await us this morning - one of the most beautiful gardens in the UK, and we bring a packed lunch with us to enjoy. Transfer to Llandudno to take a tram up the Great Orme and after a return trip we travel along the North Wales coast to Penrhyn Castle, a 19th Century Manor house. After a visit to the walled gardens, Castle and Railway museum we return to Betws-y-Coed via the Ogwen Valley.
Day 6 – Mountains to Coast
Travel on the Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon to Porthmadog where we have a buffet lunch then ride the Cambrian Coast to Tywyn. We take an afternoon Talyllyn Railway train to Abergynolwyn then transfer to Aberystwyth for a 1-night stay.
Day 7 – Vale of Rheidol and Welshpool
We take a Vale of Rheidol train from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge, and walk the short distance to Hafod Hotel for a buffet lunch. After lunch we transfer to Llanfair Caereinion to ride the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway to Welshpool. We transfer to Llangollen for a 2-night stay.
Day 8 – Dee Valley and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct
We have a free morning in Llangollen before boarding a lunch time canal cruise down the Llangollen canal and across the aqueduct to Froncysyllte. Lunch is served onboard. Upon our return to Llangollen we take a return trip on the Llangollen Steam Railway.
Day 9 – Valle Crucis Abbey and Erddig Hall
After breakfast we head to Valle Crucis Abbey, one of the best preserved Cistercian abbeys in Wales. Afterwards we transfer to Chirk where we have lunch in the Hand Hotel, a 17th Century coaching inn. This afternoon we visit Erddig stately home where we have a guided tour of the gardens before exploring the state rooms. Coach transfer back to Chester where we say farewell.
