A fabulous 27-day rail tour that covers highlights of both North and South Islands of New Zealand including spectacular rail journeys, scenic ferry journeys and the unique opportunity to self-drive a railcruiser! Truly a trip of a lifetime.
ITINERARY
Day 1 – London to Singapore
Overnight flight to Singapore, arriving the following day.
Day 2 – Arrive Singapore
Evening arrival and transfer to hotel for overnight stay.
Day 3 – Singapore to Christchurch
A half day guided sightseeing tour of Singapore before an evening flight to Christchurch.
Day 4 – Arrive Christchurch
Morning arrival in Christchurch and rest of the day at leisure.
Day 5 – Weka Pass Railway
Morning guided sightseeing tour before transferring to the Weka Pass Railway for a return journey by chartered diesel train.
Day 6 – TranzAlpine Train
Today we travel from Christchurch to Greymouth, continuing by road to Shantytown Heritage Park with a steam train journey included. Overnight at Fox Glacier.
Day 7 – To Queenstown
Morning at leisure before transferring to Queenstown by road.
Day 8 – SS Earnslaw Cruise
Cruise across Lake Wakatipu aboard the iconic century-old coal fired steamship, the TSS Earnslaw, with BBQ lunch included.
Day 9 – Kingston Flyer
We aim to travel on the Kingston Flyer steam train today if operational, or there will be time at leisure in Queenstown before transferring by road to Te Anau for a 2-night stay.
Day 10 – Milford Sound Cruise
We take an unforgettable journey into the heart of Milford Sound, travelling the length of the Fjord out to the Tasman Sea.
Day 11 – To Dunedin
Travel by road to Dunedin for a 3-night stay.
Day 12 – Taieri Gorge or Sightseeing
A return journey on the Taieri Gorge Railway if operating or guided sightseeing.
Day 13 – Seasider Train
A return journey on the spectacular Seasider Train followed by an afternoon at leisure in Dunedin.
Day 14 – Moeraki Boulders
Return by road to Christchurch visiting the Moeraki Boulders and Pleasant Point Railway & Musuem en route.
Day 15 – Coastal Pacific Train
We take the Coastal Pacific train to Picton for a 3-night stay.
Days 16 & 17 – Marlborough Flyer
Travel to Blenheim and return on the world famous Marlborough Flyer steam train and a full day at leisure to explore the seaside town of Picton.
Day 18 – Interislander Ferry
We take the Interislander ferry to Wellington. Optional evening visit to Steam Inc’s depot at Paekakariki.
Day 19 – At Leisure in Wellington
Full day at leisure with lots of sightseeing options available.
Day 20 – Northern Explorer Train
We board the Northern Explorer train and head for Hamilton for an overnight stay.
Day 21 – To Rotorua
Travel by road to Rotorua, visiting the famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves and experiencing the unique self-drive Mamaku Rail Carts en route.
Day 22 – Famous Geysers and Auckland
A morning’s guided sightseeing tour of Rotorua’s thermal area before continuing by road to Auckland.
Day 23 – At Leisure in Auckland
A full day at leisure in Auckland.
Day 24 – Glenbrook Vintage Railway
A return journey by steam on the Glenbrook Vintage Railway with workshop visit included.
Day 25 – Fly to Hong Kong
Morning flight to Hong Kong for an overnight stay.
Days 26 & 27 – Hong Kong to London
Half day guided sightseeing tour before an evening transfer to the airport for our overnight flight home.
At the time of going to press we were informed that Dunedin Railways have closed the Taieri Gorge line. We are hopeful that this decision will be reversed in time for our visit in 2024. The final confirmed itinerary will be available in May 2023.
