Tour itinerary

UK’s Leading Specialist Operator to Romania

This tour explores the historic cities of Timişoara and Sibiu, the beautiful Danube Gorge and a hidden valley with working water mills. Visit the narrow gauge railway workshops in Criscior, ride a steam charter from Criscior to Brad and the tramway museum at Ghioroc.

Day 1 – Flight to Timişoara

Mid-morning flight from London for an early evening arrival in Timişoara. Overnight hotel stay in the central area of the city.

Day 2 – Timişoara & the Danube

City tour followed by afternoon scenic train journey to Drobeta Turnu Severin. Continue by road along the Danube to Eselnita. Our small guest house is on the river bank at the entrance to the Danube Gorge and we stay here for 3 nights on half board.

Day 3 – Oravita, Anina & Water Mills

Drive along the Danube then catch the late morning branch line train from Oravita to Anina. Return to Eselnita via the water mills at Eftimie Murgu.

Day 4 – Danube Cruise

Morning 2 hour cruise from Orşova through the Danube Gorge followed by lunch (included). Afternoon local sightseeing.

Day 5 – Targu Jiu & Deva

Drive to Targu Jiu followed by afternoon scenic train journey to Deva for a 3-night stay.

Day 6 – Criscior Railway Workshops

The workshops specialise in renovating locos and equipment, not only for various narrow gauge railways in Romania but also throughout Europe, including the UK. The works visit is followed by a steam charter train to Brad where lunch is included.

Day 7 – Sibiu

We drive to Sibiu, a beautifully restored former Saxon medieval city with a pleasant traffic-free central area containing two cathedrals and a wonderful selection of old buildings and towers. We have a walking tour of the central area.

Day 8 – Arad

Late morning train to Arad. Free time in Arad which, for those interested, has a selection of
tram routes. Continue for a short distance out of town to a small family-owned winery where we stay for 2 nights on half board.

Day 9 – Ghioroc Tramway Museum

The museum accommodates trams which formerly operated on the roadside tramway between here and Arad (sadly recently closed). More sightseeing in the area before returning to our winery for a wine tasting and evening meal.

Day 10 – Flight Home

Transfer to Timişoara Airport for afternoon flight to Heathrow.

Due to the limited number of rooms in homestay accommodation, this tour will be limited to 12 persons. Please also note that the guest house in Eselnita is accessed by a flight of steps with handrail.

If you would prefer to plan your own itinerary we can tailor this tour for independent travel. Get in touch via this contact form.
