Day 1 – Basle
Early morning Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris, then by TGV to Basle for an overnight stay.
Day 2 – Wilderswil
We travel on to Wilderswil in the comfort of first class using our Swiss Travel Pass. We stay at the Hotel Bären for 7 nights. As well as breakfast each morning and dinner each night there will be a special celebration on Christmas Eve including a torchlit walk, carriage ride and mulled wine and a Christmas Day cruise on Lake Thun - all included in the holiday.
Days 3 to 8 – At Leisure in Wilderswil
The small resort village of Wilderswil is the ideal starting point for excursions to the highlights of the Bernese Oberland region. Your first class Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, trams, lake steamers and postbuses so there is something for everyone. Your experienced tour leader will offer an optional escorted excursion each day but if you prefer to be independent he or she will be on hand to assist with planning and timings if necessary. We will supply, prior to the holiday, a comprehensive excursion list to give you some suggestions to consider. Optional excursions may include Zermatt, Montreux, Gruyere, Lake Thun and Lucerne but the final plan will be weather dependent.
Day 9 – Glacier Express to Chur
Leaving the mountains of the Bernese Oberland behind, we now travel south to Brig where we board the famous Glacier Express. The panoramic windows of our first class coach afford spectacular views and stunning scenery as we journey over the Oberalp Pass, which at 2033m (6,670ft), is the highest point of the line. We continue to the Cantonal capital Chur for a 4-night stay.
Day 10 – Bernina Express
Today we offer a full day escorted excursion from Chur to Tirano travelling on the Bernina Express route. This route is the only North-South Alpine rail crossing and the summit of the line lies at an altitude of 2253m (7391ft). Travelling in first class the panoramic windows give a wide vista and the many spirals and tunnels all make this a memorable journey.
Days 11 & 12 – New Year
Free days allowing you the chance to explore Chur and the surrounding area using the UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railways network and there will be an optional escorted excursion offered each day. If you choose to go on your own do, arrange to be back in Chur in good time on New Year’s Eve as we have arranged a 3-course dinner in a popular restaurant in town (included in the cost of the holiday).
Day 13 – Gotthard Base Tunnel
We leave Chur on the postbus to Bellinzona, where we connect with the train to Basle. This train will use the new 57km Gotthard Base Tunnel and we will arrive in Basle mid-afternoon for a 2–night stay.
Day 14 – Free Time
Your final full day in Switzerland and there will be an optional escorted excursion on offer. Alternatively the city is well worth exploring either on foot or by using the extensive tram network to get around.
Day 15 – Home to London
Early morning departure on the TGV to Paris. In Paris we connect with the Eurostar service to London St Pancras arriving mid-afternoon.
