Tour Dates:
Wednesday 5 April to Wednesday 12 April 2017

With a firm focus on steam, this holiday combines a visit to the 9th Dresden Steam Engine Festival with journeys on the Lößnitzgrundbahn and a day excursion by paddlesteamer to Saxon Switzerland.

Day 1 – London to Aachen

Boarding a lunchtime Eurostar we make our way to Aachen via Thalys from Brussels. A welcome dinner is included this evening.

Day 2 – Onwards to Dresden

Travel via regional services and ICE from Aachen to Dresden. Our hotel for the next 5 nights is situated in central Dresden, next to the Prager shopping centre, just a short walk from the railway station.

Days 3 & 4 – Dresden Steam Engine Festival

We have 2 full days to spend at the festival, as well as tickets for a special photography event on the Friday evening. Exact details of the festival’s programme will be confirmed by festival organisers nearer the time, but we can expect informative presentations, fascinating displays, steam loco cab rides, diesel engines at the Verkehrsmuseum, model trains and both historic and modern locos. We will have access to the festival area around the railway museum and the Dresden traffic museum, as well as an evening illuminated photo session of steam locomotives at Roundhouse 1 with commentary, and a steam train journey to either Decin, Tharandter, Rampe or Nossen.

Day 5 – Lößnitzgrundbahn & Mortizburg Castle

Today sees us catch a morning suburban service to Radebeul Ost for a journey on the Lößnitzgrundbahn, a 750mm gauge steam railway. We break our journey at the half-way point for a guided tour of Mortizburg Castle, built in 1542 as a hunting lodge for the then Duke of Saxony. After our tour of the castle we continue to the end of the line and return before transferring to the S-bahn for our journey back to Dresden.

Day 6 – Sächsische Schweiz

Today we journey to Sächsische Schweiz, or Saxon Switzerland, by paddlesteamer from Dresden. We catch a morning paddlesteamer from Dresden to Bad Schandau where we transfer to the historic Kirnitzschtal Tramway which runs through the valley of the Kirnitzch river to Lichtenhain Waterfall. The tramway uses a selection of vintage trams and has all the atmosphere of the roadside lines that were once so common in Europe. On arrival back in Bad Schandau, we must take a ferry to reach the main line station and return to Dresden by S-bahn.

Day 7 – To Cologne

Bidding farewell to Dresden, we board the direct morning InterCity to Cologne. We arrive Cologne late afternoon and make our way to the Ibis Hotel, which is located next to the station. The rest of the evening is at leisure to explore this vibrant city.

Day 8 – Homeward Bound

Returning home via Brussels, we arrive London late afternoon.
