When it comes to celebrating in style and tradition, few do it better than Romanians and what better time to illustrate this point than New Year when the mountains will also have that crisp seasonal look.

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Flight to Iaşi

Afternoon flight from London Heathrow for a late evening arrival in Iaşi. Overnight hotel stay.

Day 2 – Onwards to Bucovina

After a city tour of Iaşi by specially chartered vintage tram (weather permitting) and a welcome lunch with wine tasting, we have an afternoon drive into Bucovina, home of the famous Painted Monasteries. Our home for the next four nights will be the Pensiunea Crizantema in the tiny village of Moldovita. Here we are assured of a warm welcome and an evening meal will have been prepared for us.

Day 3 – Painted Monasteries and New Year Parade

Local towns in the area have colourful parades and we will aim to see one in Gura Humorului as well as visiting the Painted Monasteries of Voronet and Sucevita.

Day 4 (New Year’s Eve) – Moldovita Steam Railway

The narrow gauge former forestry line operates a special service for New Year and adds a different perspective to the celebrations. After a morning on the train (heated of course) we return to our guest house for lunch followed by traditional New Year song and dance routines by the local children in their traditional costumes. The dances symbolise the birth of the New Year in the agricultural communities and come with good wishes for health and abundant crops. Continuing the rural theme we will have a sleigh or horse and cart ride (according to the weather). Evening meal is likely to be traditional Romanian and of course midnight is celebrated here as in the rest of the world.

Day 5 – New Year at Moldovita Painted Monastery

A leisurely start and a late “brunch”. Today is a religious holiday and we will attend the last part of the service at the nearby Moldovita Painted Monastery for the New Year Ceremony of the Plough. The afternoon is free for a leisurely stroll in the village. Evening meal once more at our guest house.

Day 6 – Across the Carpathians

The high mountains are spectacular at any time of the year but none more so than in winter. Our destination is the logging town of Vişeu de Sus in the remote province of Maramureş and our accommodation is at the well appointed Hotel Gabriela.

Day 7 – Steam in the Vaser Valley

Here we find the last active logging railway in Europe, surviving because of lack of roads in the valley. We ride the morning steam hauled passenger train and have time for a BBQ sandwich lunch at the far terminus before arriving back early afternoon. There will now be time to drive to Ieud and perhaps Poienile Izei to see the small wooden churches and houses that are traditional in the area.

Day 8 – Cluj Napoca

We recross the mountains to the city of Cluj Napoca where we should arrive in the mid afternoon.

Day 9 – Flight to London

We fly via Bucharest to London Heathrow, arriving at 1405.

Due to the limited number of rooms in Moldovita this tour will be limited to 12 persons.
