Day 1 – Flight to Cluj Napoca

Afternoon flight from London Heathrow for a late evening arrival in Cluj. Overnight hotel.

Day 2 – Turda Gorge

Following a brief stroll around Cluj, we take a short drive to Turda Gorge for an easy walk on a well marked path along the river. Continue to Rimetea, a traditional village in the Hungarian speaking part of the Western Carpathians. Evening meal included at our guest house.

Day 3 – Sezskely Rock

Walk along the base of the Piatra Secuiului (Sezskely Rock) through glorious mountain scenery to the next village of Colteşti – around two hours each way.

Day 4 – Ramet Monastery, Mediaş & Copşa Mare

We walk through pretty meadows to Ramet Monastery (3 hours), then transfer to Teius to catch the afternoon train to Mediaş. We stay for 2 nights with evening meal in the remote village of Copşa Mare with its typical Saxon architecture.

Day 5 – Biertan

The walk to Biertan is some two hours each way and here we find an impressive fortified church in typical Saxon style.

Day 6 – Malancrav & Sighişoara

Luggage will go by bus whilst we walk over rolling hills to Malancrav, another typical Saxon village with church and manor house. Short transfer to Sighişoara, a fortified citadel and UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as birthplace of Vlad the Impaler (Count Dracula). We continue by private coach to Crit, yet another beautiful Saxon village where we are assured of a warm welcome and an excellent dinner. We spend 2 nights here.

Day 7 – Viscri

This well preserved village has a UNESCO Heritage church and became famous when the former Prince of Wales, now King Charles, bought a small property in the main street. After the village visit, we have a 4-hour walk through meadows and woodland to Mesendorf. Our guest house will provide a packed lunch today.

Day 8 – Braşov & Magura

Drive to Braşov, an impressive well restored medieval city, for a look around. Afternoon train along the branch line to Zarneşti where our bus will meet us to drive into the mountains to Magura for a 2-night stay.

Day 9 – Zarneşti Gorge

An easy walk with packed lunch through stunning mountain scenery.

Day 10 – By Train Over the Carpathians

Transfer to Braşov for a main line train over the mountains to Bucharest for an overnight stay.
