A chance to visit one of Europe’s oldest Christmas Markets and France’s very first! Strasbourg is beautiful all year, but becomes even more stunning when festooned with Christmas illuminations. Enjoy the city’s Christmas traditions with time to visit nearby Colmar and Mulhouse for more festive shopping and some railway history!

Itinerary

Day 1 – By Train to Strasbourg

Morning Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris Nord where you will cross over to Paris Est for the onward train to Strasbourg, arriving mid-afternoon. Your 3-night stay will be at the centrally located Hotel Cathedrale on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2 – Christmas Market Shopping

Spend the day enjoying the famous Strasbourg Christmas Market, one of the oldest in Europe and the very first in France, dating back to 1571. Strasbourg was once part of Germany and its Christmas Market still reflects the influence of its German past. Known today as the ‘Capital of Christmas’ you can explore over 300 chalets stalls, selling arts, crafts and many culinary treats.

Day 3 – Colmar

Take a morning train to Colmar, approximately half an hour away, and wander through the picturesque streets of this small town and enjoy its traditional Christmas Markets. After lunch you can catch the train to Mulhouse, just twenty minutes away, and, while not as popular with tourists as Strasbourg and Colmar, it is still architecturally pretty and worth seeing. Here you can visit the ‘Cité du Train’, the largest railway museum in Europe and immerse yourself in its impressive collection, including the oldest preserved locomotive in Europe. Return by train to Strasbourg, an hour away.

Day 4 – Homeward Bound

Catch the mid-morning train from Strasbourg to Paris Est. Cross over to Paris Nord for your return Eurostar to London St Pancras, arriving late afternoon.
