A chance to experience some German Christmas traditions in the run-up to the festive season. Freiburg becomes a magical place at Christmas when colourful market stalls light up its historic centre. As well as Christmas shopping, enjoy some scenic sightseeing in the wonderful Black Forest and Rhine Valley.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Train to Freiburg

Travel by Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris Nord and short distance change to Paris Est to catch the train to Freiburg, with one further change in Karlsruhe. A 4 night stay at the Best Western Hotel is ideally located, just a short walk away from the city centre and railway station.

Day 2 – Christmas Market Shopping

Spend the day exploring the magical atmosphere of the Freiburg Christmas Markets, situated in the heart of the historic quarter of the city. Buy traditional arts and crafts gifts from the Black Forest region and feast on some festive food and drink including mulled wine and bratwurst.

Day 3 – The Black Forest

Travel by train through the Black Forest, famous for its cuckoo clocks and watch making, and the inspiration for the forest-based fairytales of ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘Snow White’ and ‘Rapunzel’.

Using your InterRail pass, take a morning train from Freiburg to Seebrugg which will take you through the centre of the Black Forest and past the three lakes of Titisee, Windgfällweiher, and Schluchsee. Why not stop off and have lunch at Schluchsee or Titisee, and enjoy the beauty of the lakes?

On the return train to Freiburg, stop off at Hinterzarten to catch the free shuttle outside the station which takes you the short drive to Ravenna Gorge where, on Friday to Sunday afternoons only, there is a Christmas market held right under the railway viaduct of the Devil’s Valley Railway in the Black Forest Highland. A small entrance fee is required to enjoy the unique Christmas Market. Return to Hinterzarten via the free shuttle to catch the return train to Freiburg.

Day 4 – Schauinsland Cable Car

Take a late morning tram from Freiburg to Gunterstal to ride the Schauinsland cable car, which at 3.6km in length, is reportedly the longest gondola lift in Germany. The 20 minute ride ascends to a height of 1220m, to the summit of the Schauinsland Mountain where you can enjoy a cheese fondue in the restaurant with views across the Rhine Valley. Descend to the lower station by cable car and return by tram to enjoy your last evening in Freiburg.

Day 5 – Homeward Bound

After breakfast head to Freiburg railway station to catch the morning train to Paris Est. Cover the short distance from Paris Est to Paris Nord to catch the afternoon Eurostar to London St Pancras, arriving late afternoon.
