At the turn of the 20th Century a dream of harnessing steam technology to link Africa’s vast south and north was born. A railway route that would cross the awe-inspiring mountain ranges that dot the continent, journeying through arid desert landscapes and over untamed savannah grasslands teeming with wildlife. ‘Parallel lines of tempered steel from the Cape all the way to Cairo’. Cairo, however was not to be, but the dreamers persevered and The Blue Train now traverses South Africa, travelling through breath-taking scenery befits the original dream. Kings and presidents have travelled aboard and been indulged by the opulence of this magnificent, five-star “hotel-on-wheels”. You too can travel like royalty and celebrities and experience spectacular luxury and an unforgettable train journey.

NB: You have the option of including this special rail journey as part of a Tailor Made tour. Itinerary

Cape Town to Pretoria

Day 1 – Departure from Cape Town

Your luxury train experience begins at The Blue Train Lounge, Cape Town Station, early in the morning with pre-departure snacks and drinks before you are escorted to your suite by a Butler. On leaving Cape Town Station brunch is served on board the train. The train makes a stop in Matjiesfontein for a 45 minute excursion. It begins with a glass of sherry at the bar and the sherry glass, engraved with The Blue Train logo, is a memento for guests to keep. Matjiesfontein is an attractive town with a main street lined with white-washed Victorian houses and the colonial Lord Milner hotel is a notable building. The town used to serve as something of an oasis in the 1880s when James Douglas Logan built the historic buildings as a country health resort for the rich and famous. The Blue Train continues its journey northbound to Pretoria during which high tea is served in the lounge car. Dinner is an elegant affair and men are requested to wear a jacket and tie and ladies elegant evening wear.

Day 2 – Arriving in Pretoria

Breakfast is served from 7:30am to 10am which leaves plenty of time to enjoy the journey before arriving at Pretoria Station. Butlers escort guests to their transfers.
