Visiting Winchester in the run-up to Christmas will certainly get you in the festive mood. Hampshire’s county town is a wonderful place to visit at this time of year and its crowning glory is the colourful Christmas Markets that surround its majestic Cathedral. A wonderful opportunity to buy some interesting gifts and enjoy festive food and drink. An added bonus is the chance to ride the nearby Watercress Line and see the scenic local countryside.

Day 1 – Arrive Winchester

Arrive by train to Winchester for a 3 night stay at the Winchester Royal Hotel on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2 – Explore Wonderful Winchester

Explore and enjoy the Christmas Markets of Winchester, known as England’s ‘Christmas Capital’. The market stalls are inspired by the traditional German Christmas Markets and you will find wooden chalets and a purpose built ice rink situated within the unique location of the Cathedral’s historic Close.

Day 3 – Watercress Line

Catch an early morning train from Winchester, changing trains at Woking, before arriving at Alton to board the Watercress Line steam train. Sit back and enjoy a one hour journey through the Hampshire countryside whilst being served some festive white wine and mince pies. There will be time to explore the market town of Alton and visit the ‘Curtis Museum’ to learn about the local history, or the nearby village of Chawton, the home of Jane Austen and the ‘Jane Austen’s House Museum’. Return to Winchester via rail from Alton, changing trains at Woking.

Day 4 – Homeward Bound

Check out of your hotel before making your way home.
