This August enjoy a journey into the past, and immerse yourself in the heritage of the North Wales Slate industry. From your base in Caernarfon, enjoy visits to the impressive Edwardian Castle, Llanberis Lake Railway and the National Slate Museum plus a guided tour of the heritage of the Welsh Highland Railway.


Day 1 – Travel to Caernarfon

Travel to the royal town of Caernarfon (we can arrange rail tickets to nearby Bangor station from your local station at an additional cost). Upon arrival enjoy the afternoon at leisure exploring the town walls and the UNESCO World Heritage Castle built by Edward I in 1283.

Day 2 – Llanberis Lake Railway & National Slate Museum

This morning travel to Llanberis. Located in the shadows of Snowdon and the former Dinorwic Quarry, catch a mid-morning journey on the Llanberis Lake Railway. On the return journey, alight at Gilfach Ddu station and visit the National Slate Museum. See the former slate works, an array of talks and demonstrations are available, including slate splitting, giving you a real insight into quarry life.

Day 3 – Welsh Highland Railway’s Journey into the Past

Today explore the hidden history of the Welsh Highland Railway, on a Journey into the Past. At Caernarfon station, you will be met by your informed guide, before travelling on board an authentic heritage train, stopping to explore Dinas and the restored Tryfan Junction station. Here there is opportunity for some unusual photo opportunities and a mug of station masters tea or coffee. A picnic lunch is served as part of the experience. (Vegetarian and Gluten Free options available – Please state at time of booking)

Day 4 – Return Home

After a leisurely breakfast at your accommodation, depart Caernarfon for home. Alternatively extend your stay to make the most of the many attractions in the area.
